A michiyuki (道行) is a traditional Japanese outer coat worn over a kimono, primarily by women. Vintage examples are especially common from the Taishō through Shōwa periods, and many surviving pieces date roughly from the 1930s through the 1970s.
The easiest way to recognize a michiyuki is by its distinctive squared or rectangular neckline and closed front. It usually fastens with covered buttons, snaps, or concealed closures. Museums describe this square neckline and buttoned front as characteristic features of the garment.
The name is associated with going out or traveling: michi relates to “road/street,” while yuki conveys “going.” In practical terms, the michiyuki was the coat a woman put on over her kimono when leaving the house, protecting the kimono from dust, wind, cool weather, and incidental contact.
