Fabric History/Pedigree: 1990's tsumugi (pongee) silk pieces received from a traditional Japanese kimono cleaner/reconstructor (Arai-Hari -- see an excellent explanation of traditional Arai Hari by textile expert John Marshall, by click-pushing HERE. )

Fabric Description:  This rather unusual piece is a distinctive Japanese vintage traditional Tsumugi, lightweight pongee-type silk that is an iridescent  light olive-green background, but the majority of the colors and print on the front of the entire fabric range from black to dark moss green, to light mustard-yellows & pale limes; There are obtuse and oblique geometric shapes throughout; these shapes are created by brocade from the reverse; the resulting sense of this piece -- while dark in tones-- also has a luminous quality to it; we had great difficulty capturing the colors in our images; The last image is of the reverse showing how lines etc are rendered using brocade.

As for the motif, note that the background to the obtuse shapes is of the Asa-no-Ha (Hemp Leaves) design, a popular motif dating back centuries in Japanese art; thus a clever blend of modernistic with classic Japanese motifs; Also, there are some lateral brush strokes patterns in various places; due to all the metallic threadwork, fabric is slightly stiff and is textured to the touch.
