Fabric History/Pedigree: 1960s, found as partial deadstock roll.

Fabric Description: Deadstock, never used, Japanese vintage Kasuri (ikat) cotton fabric from the 1990s.

Fabric Type: Kasuri (ikat), lightweight, slightly translucent, stiff; dark indigo (almost black) background color fabric with a very distinctive (rarely seen by us here) lattice sort of array of geometric shapes on intersecting lines that form a subtle diagonal grid; The elements are evocative of impressionistic looking leaves (oak?), 4 inches X 2.25 inches (10.16cm X 5.71cm); the colors of these shapes alternate from pale blue with gray, to burgundy colors with faint mustard tones; the latter colored shapes use pinstripes to form the designs; (Please see close-ups); same on both sides.

Condition: Excellent (still firm, softens with washing -- requires special washing instructions -- please let us know if you need them).

This is an unused Japanese country vintage fabric called kasuri (also called ikat in Southeast Asia; ) ; Kasuri is a labor-intensive process where patterns are made by pre-dyed paste resistance and varying techniques used to create the sorts of patterns seen here. Because of the methods used, authentic kasuri is usually highly expensive. More info on kasuri below:

**Wikipedia.org, on-line encyclopedia, defines Kasuri as:**

...a Japanese word for fabric that has been woven with fibers dyed specifically to create patterns and images in the fabric. It is an ikat technique. Kasuri is weft ikat; the warp threads are solid color, and the weft thread is resist-tied in a specific pattern and dyed with indigo to form a picture when the cloth is woven. Japanese ikats are generally weft ikats or double ikats.
