Fabric History/Pedigree: Pieces received from a traditional Japanese kimono cleaner/reconstructor called Arai-Hari -- see an excellent explanation of traditional Arai Hari by textile expert John Marshall,by click-pushing HERE.
Fabric Description: Frankly, we've not seen a shibori of this type in years; it is a light-weight silk shibori (hand-tie-dyed) fabric; derived from a kimono or nagajuban; This is a soft white background color, with most unusual shibori pinholes all over the fabric; these pinholes originally were used to render the pattern of irregular waves-like red broken lines, all running lengthwise (warp); To us, this looks like a rippling stream; Also, for whatever reason, this shibori does not have the rougher texture seen in all other shibori silks, and is flat and smooth on both sides; furthermore, we see some small (less than 1 inch/2.54cm tall) very pale-brown prints of daisy mums maple leaves and bamboos placed horizontally(weft) -- These are scarcely visible, even in brighter light, and they are randomly placed in a few spaces per piece; pattern looks the same on both sides, but, by design, the front is slightly darker red; silk has a slight sheen.
