Fabric History/Pedigree: 1950s-60s silk fabric pieces received from a traditional Japanese kimono cleaner/reconstructor called Arai-Hari -- see an excellent explanation of traditional Arai Hari by textile expert John Marshall,by click-pushing HERE.

Fabric Description: This is lightweight printed silk derived from a woman's kimono; the fabric is a light-purple background with designs on one side only; the motif is of the Aoi flower (Mallow) in off-white and pale pastel blues, with the Aoi blossoms in red and peach-pink colors; fabric is lightly textured, sort of like a soft chirimen; Print on one side, little drape, and minimal sheen.

*CULTURAL BACKGROUND NOTE:

In classic Japanese art, the Aoi flower is symbolic: For traditionalists, it is associated with the Divine and the theme of longevity, favored by upper aristocracy in Old Japan.
