Fabric Description: Lightweight meisen silk from the 1930s–1950s, cream background with gradations of pastel pinks and pale blues. The design combines scrolling vine patterns with floral motifs rendered in Hogushi-Kasuri (warp-weft) weave.

Motif Details: This thin, lightweight, almost sheer and translucent piece exemplifies pre-war Japanese design influenced by 1920s–1940s Art Nouveau and Art Deco from Europe and the USA. The motif is called Hanabishi, or, lit., Flower-Diamond; a highly stylized modern version measuring 8 inches / 20.32 cm at its longest dimension; figures alternate side to side, cascading down the fabric; Fabric background color is dark purple, with the figures using off-white/silver, white, pink, vermilion, light olive-green, and yellow at the center; Motifs appear on both sides.
