Item Details and Description

  • Fabric History/Pedigree:  1980s  or earlier tsumugi silk fabric pieces from a partial deadstock roll found with other similar old fabrics.

  • Fabric Description:

Fabric is light to medium weight, minimally translucent, with a mixed copper and broowns colors with Bokashi gradation dyeing in pastel rainbow hues of yellows, lavenders to blue, some dark aqua-blues (gradation), and bright rust tones (see closeups);h intentionally fuzzy boundaries of all designs; the fabric is stiff and is minimally translucent (only if a bright light is behind the silk).

  • CULTURAL NOTES:

During the 1980s fashion boom in Japan, weavers combined traditional Tsumugi techniques with modern color palettes. This piece reflects that era by pairing a classic, earthy base with a vibrant, pastel rainbow gradient stripe (Bokashi dyeing technique); the fabric feels like raw, barely processed silk. This resembles Nishijin weaves we've seen before; it's the same on both sides.
