Item Details and Description:

Fabric History/Pedigree:  Piece received from a traditional Japanese kimono cleaner/reconstructor called Arai-Hari -- see an excellent explanation of traditional Arai Hari by textile expert John Marshall by clicking HERE;

 For an excellent 'how-to' do  Arai-Hari oneself, we highly recommend Kae Warnock's Blog, Chocolate Factotum:

  • Fabric Description:  light-medium weight Japanese silk, minimally translucent; This piece is shibori (tie-dyed) on one side (about 7 inches / 16.78 cm) with classic tiny dots (kanoko / fawn spot patterns) in white on red; on solid red side is a red background color interwoven throughout with the diagonal theme geometric maze-type with chrysanthemums -- design traditionally associated with Buddhist temples, this runs throughout the right side of the fabric and there is sheen on that side; this was probably from a fashionable nagajuban silk garment, worn with formal kimonos; due to the shibori tie-dyeing process, the fabric is in relief and slightly textured to the touch; some drape.
