Item Details and Description:

Fabric History/Pedigree:  Pieces received from a traditional Japanese kimono cleaner/reconstructor called Arai-Hari -- see an excellent explanation of traditional Arai Hari by textile expert John Marshall by clicking HERE;

 For an excellent 'how-to' do  Arai-Hari oneself, we highly recommend Kae Warnock's Blog, Chocolate Factotum:

  • Fabric Description:  light-medium weight Japanese silk, dark-brown (black in lower lighting); This piece is full shibori (tie-dyed) with classic tiny dots (kanoko / fawn spot patterns) in white on black, rusty-red accents as described here; the entire field viewed is called hishi-goshi, a traditional classic Japanese desiign, diamond lattice pattern, with 4-petal flowers within the diamonds, alternating rows; this was probably from a fashionable haori or kimono silk garment, worn at events; due to the shibori, the fabric is in relief and quite textured to the touch.
