For an excellent 'how-to' do  Arai-Hari oneself, we highly recommend Kae Warnock's Blog, Chocolate Factotum:

Fabric Type:  Lightweight, delicate & slightly translucent chirimen (crepe) silk deconstructed from a woman's kimono; background color is beige with multiple classic motifs, Sansui (country scenes), combines with riverboat (takasefune); these motifs, in combination, are replete with undulating stream and boats, as well as country hut, small river dock, stylized pine and other trees and flowers;  Design colors are dark red beach or river bank on cream color; multiple classic figures and designs are present: kanako (Fawn spots) or, shibori-dots; a soft-white and cream; other colors: gradation dark lavender to pale pastel light purples; dark to light olive-greens, dark blues, some black, orange and greens;  designs on one side but apparent on reverse; fabric is soft and good drape.

Recommended for making scarves or accessories.
