Fabric Description: Lightweight, sheer translucent indigo-blue-black with apparent cloud shapes place randomly;fabric is called Asa, a hemp-based traditional fabric made in Japan for centuries up until the 1950s; fabric Asa is harder than silk or cotton and has utilitarian purposes such as coverings, screen mesh, and work clothing; this one is lighter and smoother for use in clothing; Af first glance in room lighting, color appears black, but in brighter light and close inspection the indigo dye base is apparent, and can be seen at fringe of the white figures; color in these clouds are very light pastel blue, peach and grays.
Asa is stronger and lasts longer than cotton. This particular piece is thinner, probably intended for making a summer kimono; fabric is smoother and tighter weave than the more utilitarian asa we see.
