Fabric History/Pedigree: Pieces received from a traditional Japanese kimono cleaner/reconstructor called Arai-Hari -- see an excellent explanation of traditional Arai Hari by textile expert John Marshall,by click-pushing HERE.

Fabric Description: Light-medium weight silk is a 1980s piece from a woman's kimono; the fabric background color is cream-light tan; The Design is unusual for Japanese kimono fabric (in our opinion), and resembles the multiple pictures that we found doing an AI comparison: Among them, we found a wallpaper designed by Oscar De La Renta, called Sameera Paper; The motif of our fabric here resembles it; Motif of this fabric is of groups of long fern(?) leaves with small other leaves (Japanese Maple)i n the spaces surrounding the ferns; Colors of designs are dark brown, tan, various other shades of golden brown; fabric has very slight chirimen textured feel, but we're not labeling this as a full chirimen (crepe); fabric is slightly stiff. slight drape;

Comment: To our eye, this fabric pattern resembles classic Muslim(Arabic) wallpaper. Also, to see that Oscar de la Renta used an Arabic name (a Woman, Sameera - there are various other romanization spellings) for his design shows how influences for kimono fabrics have shifted over time, and how kimono designers borrow designs from various other cultures, and vice versa.
