For an excellent 'how-to' do  Arai-Hari oneself, we highly recommend Kae Warnock's Blog, Chocolate Factotum:

Fabric Description: Medium-weight silk, deconstructed  from woman's kimono; The background  is of various gradation shades of dark emerald to almost black, also, background has some areas that shade into white or orange; in addition, the fabric is interwoven with flowers and stems as well, subtle sheen, though only noticeable from up close at an angle; The foreground design is of white-outlined chrysanthemums, as well as smaller sized flowers, all as if afloat or falling -- a modernistic sense to it;  fabric is smooth to touch with sheen as noted; motifs intended as on one side.
