Fabric History/Pedigree: 1930s-1950s, deadstock vintage Japanese Kasuri (ikat) found with a lot of partial rolls and pieces; e-gasuri type.

Fabric Description: Deadstock, never used, Japanese vintage Kasuri (ikat) cotton fabric from the 1930s-1950s; fabric is thin/translucent, stiff with background color of indigo-blue/black with figures/designs in pale blue, light blue-gray; this is of the type called E-Gasuri (lit. picture-kasuri) because the kasuri is dyed-woven with images, in this case, of possibly morning glory flowers on vines; The uneven edged diamond shapes(flowers) measure average 2.25 inches / 5.71cm at longest dimension; Also, note that the connecting vines create a diagonal and symmetrical arrangement; please see close-ups; same on both sides.

Condition: Excellent; Still firm, the fabric softens with multiple washes. (hand-wash separately, with lukewarm water-- see our FAQ Page for care and cleaning tips.

Notes:

This is an unused Japanese country vintage fabric called kasuri (also called ikat in Southeast Asia; ) ; Kasuri is a labor-intensive process where patterns are made by pre-dyed paste resistance and varying techniques used to create the sorts of patterns seen here. Because of the methods used, authentic kasuri is usually highly expensive. More info on kasuri below:

...a Japanese word for fabric that has been woven with fibers dyed specifically to create patterns and images in the fabric. It is an ikat technique. Kasuri is weft ikat; the warp threads are solid color, and the weft thread is resist-tied in a specific pattern and dyed with indigo to form a picture when the cloth is woven. Japanese ikats are generally weft ikats or double ikats.
