Fabric History/Pedigree: 1960s, deadstock vintage Japanese Kasuri (ikat) found with a lot of partial rolls and pieces.

Fabric Description: Deadstock, never used, Japanese vintage Kasuri (ikat) cotton fabric from the 1960s; fabric is thin/translucent with a background color of indigo-blue (almost black )with a distinctive design of parallel pin-striped bands in zig-zag array running diagonally;These zig-zag bands are .25 inch/6.35mm wide and they run in perpendicular steps, 1.5 inches/38.1mm and 1.24 inches/31.75mm running lengthwise (warp) down the full fabric; Set in the steps are .5inch/12.7mm fuzzy orbs in alternating colors of light aqua-blue, yellow and reds; please see close-ups.

Condition: Excellent; Still firm, the fabric softens with multiple washes. (hand-wash separately, with lukewarm water-- see our FAQ Pages for cleaning tips.

This is an unused Japanese country vintage fabric called kasuri (also called ikat in Southeast Asia; ) ; Kasuri is a labor-intensive process where patterns are made by pre-dyed paste resistance and varying techniques used to create the sorts of patterns seen here. ...a Japanese word for fabric that has been woven with fibers dyed specifically to create patterns and images in the fabric. It is an ikat technique. Kasuri is weft ikat; the warp threads are solid color, and the weft thread is resist-tied in a specific pattern and dyed with indigo to form a picture when the cloth is woven. Japanese ikats are generally weft ikats or double ikats.
