Fabric History/Pedigree: This is a medium-weight 1980s deadstock tsumugi (pongee) silk (new but unsold stock of another time); This is called Kouchi Tsumugi, made in the Niigata prefecture area; This area is on the Japan Sea side, northwest part of Japan, in pre-modern times it was called Echigo. This type of tsumugi (pongee) silk is only found in that area; this piece still has the original label maker's label on it.
Fabric Description Details:
Moss-green fabric is textured to the touch and slightly stiff; The design is the same on both sides, interwoven grid of about 1 inch ( 25.4mm) square figures which are a variety of geometric shapes and interwoven in pixelated style, same on both sides; Design figures' colors are mixtures of colonial blue, tan and dark brown; Selvedge on both sides is 1/4 inch (6.35 mm); Attached paper label reads, "Kouchi Tsumugi, Handwoven 100% silk, Association of Kouchi (Echigo Folkcraft Weaving)"
