Fabric History/Pedigree: Japanese vintage kimono silk fabric pieces of deadstock fabric from the 1960s; Originally for making furisode formal kimono.
Fabric Type: Lightweight kimono silk with a slight sheen and thin burnished gold-lined borders and accents around motifs; the fabric is slightly stiff, less drape due to all the designs printed on one side; Color of background (though most of the fabric is full of designs) is mostly vermilion (a type of orange-red, said traditionally to keep away evil spirits, good luck) and various greens (light lime to dark kelly green); Motifs are on one side but visible on the reverse.
Motifs: Full use of many classic traditional Japanese art motifs throughout, including: 8 large butterflies (7.5 inches / 19.05 cm across) , decorated fans, waves, flowers, crests, pine branches, maple leaves, and an abundance of mon (crests) of different classic types; also, some fields in small areas include shibori-dotted patterns, not actual tie-dyed.
Design Colors: In addition to the main colors described above, other colors include: plum, deep purple, mustard-lime, white and various shades of yellow; See close-ups.
