Item Details and Description
Fabric History/Pedigree: 1950's or earlier rare blend of Asa (hemp or flax-based) and silk pieces received from traditional Japanese kimono cleaner/reconstructor called Arai-Hari -- see an excellent explanation of traditional Arai Hari by textile expert John Marshall,by click-pushing HERE.
Fabric Description: Japanese vintage traditional asa (hemp)fabric; fabric is normally stiff but this blend is somewhat softer than all-hemp(asa); fabric is slightly rough to the touch as the type weave makes it appear like tree bark pattern if viewed up close; Asa is used traditionally for various practical uses such as coverlets or screening, as well as work or utilitarian garments; This one is softer than many of those we see, so the designs indicate this was from a summer kimono. The fabric is ever so slightly translucent with texture caused by tiny pinstripes interwoven horizontally as well as the lengthwise bark-like pattern of the weave; Remarkable fabric though our pictures cannot seem to capture the texture very well (Please see close-ups).
Colors: Background is a mix of charcoal-black and dark chocolate.
