Item Details and Description
Characteristics: A plain woven silk fabric with pre-dyed scoured threads both for warp and weft. The color is refined and calm and the fabric is soft and difficult to wrinkle. Threads are dyed with plant dyes such as "Techiki" (Raphilolepis umbellata) and indigo (Persicaria tinctoria) with a technique, peculiar only to "Oshima Tsumugi," called "Ori Jime." As a variety, an additional treatment is made to the dyed thread by dipping them in muddy water. It is "Doro(mud) Zome(dyeing)." There are several kinds of "Oshima Tsumugi":"Doro Oshima," "Ai(indigo) Oshima," "Doro Ai Oshima," "Iro(color) Oshima" and "Natsu(summer) Oshima."
Fabric Description Details:
From a full 11.2m (12yds) roll with original factory label Ohshima certification intact; The design is same on both sides, designs are butterflies and flowers in columns which run lengthwise: Fabric is cream-colored background with the shapes done in *pixelated colonial blues and reds -- some lavenders; this pixelation renders a very subdued pattern from normal viewing distance, but you must look up close to see the intricacies.
*Design Notes: Intricate & complex shapes made by pixelated designs; see close-ups for varied small-point pixels/fine-lines to render shapes and figures of the designs.
TECH NOTES ON PHOTOS: Our photos ==except for the label images -- are slightly darker than fabric appears in normal room light; we rendered them slightly darker to better reveal the designs, so fabric is slightly lighter cream color than our main pictures.
Condition: EXCELLENT, remarkable condition for its age.
Seldom found, popular among Antique Japanese textile aficionados and fashion designers.
