Fabric Description: Deadstock never used), Japanese vintage kasuri (ikat) cotton fabric;
Fabric Type: Tsumugi (pongee) silk woven and dyed in Kasuri method; Light-Medium Weight, still firm; This is a traditional ikat with white geometric shapes in unusual symmetrical arrangements; sort of striped effect by the arrangement of different size squares and rectangles.
Colors: background is dark-indigo blue (almost black, see close-ups).
This is an unused Japanese country vintage fabric called kasuri (also called ikat in Southeast Asia; ) ; It is different because most kasuri is done in cotton, but this is in pongee silk, called Tsumugi; For background information of tsumugi, visit:
Kasuri is a labor-intensive process where patterns are made by pre-dyed paste resistance and varying techniques used to create the sorts of patterns seen here. Because of the methods used, authentic kasuri is usually highly expensive. More info on kasuri below:
