Fabric History/Pedigree: 1960's Asa (hemp or flax-based)pieces received from traditional Japanese kimono cleaner/reconstructor called Arai-Hari -- see an excellent explanation of traditional Arai Hari by textile expert John Marshall,by click-pushing HERE.
Fabric Description: Japanese vintage traditional asa (hemp)fabric; weave and look is similar to meisen and designs same on both sides; Asa was used traditionally for various practical uses such as coverlets or screening, as well as garments; This one is more colorful and the designs indicate this was from a summer kimono. The fabric is slightly translucent.
Measurements: width =14.5 inches/ 36.83 cm; Length= 56 inches / 1.42m Yards.
Colors: various shades of olive-green, black, dark aqua-blue, copper, burgundy-reds and off-white.
Motifs: traditional use of large dots evocative of shibori dots (but not shibori) in various fields created by curved lines.
