Item Details and Description

Fabric History/Pedigree: 1950's-60's fabric, deadstock (like new, never used from another era) for use in making a sash (obi); 100% Japanese silk; Received as partial roll; designs shown are continuous; first we've ever seen such a Western (British) feel to kimono fabric designs; see further comments below in 'Motifs'.

Fabric Type & Colors: Medium-weight silk, 100% Japanese silk, with interwoven tiny metallic gold threads running horizontally throughout; Thick as if for use as an obi (sash); See pictures for different color schemes on each side: Main side (front) is burgundy red background with dark forest greens whites and silvers; reverse is dark forest green background.

Motifs:  In our years of handling vintage Japanese kimono fabrics we've never seen one quite like this; It strongly resembles a British royal crest (Richard the Lionhearted), but also has phoenix (bird)-looking designs within the circles which are 2 inches (5.1cm) in diameter in rows; small horses and deer (straight horned) alternate rows between the circle rows; In the 1950s kimono designers felt freed after the war so were often very bold in borrowing from Western culture. Perhaps this is an instance of that; Or, it might have been made for an English customer. Regardless, it's a fascinating and high quality piece of silk. If someone can tell us more about this, by all means drop us a line HERE.
Condition: Excellent.

NOTE: Multiple lengths ordered will be sent in one uncut piece.
