Item Details and Description

Fabric History/Pedigree: 1960's, deadstock bolt of Japanese muslin (wool); (Deadstock means old inventory which is like new, but has been in storage, never been used)

Fabric Description: Japanese vintage  muslin kimono fabric in double wide (28inches / 71.1cm) width, in original binding and labels.

Fabric Type: Light-medium weight muslin, slight drape; Japanese wool is smoother and tighter weave than many Western worsted wools. (Interesting discussion of the term worsted wool is here.)

Measurements: width=28 inches / 71.1cm; Length= 5yards / 4.4m (estimated as we did not undo the original bindings).

Colors: Background is shuiro (vermillion, which traditionally symbolizes good luck/warding off evil spirits) and off-white; designs of temari balls are in mixed pastels and darks, colonial blue, black, gray and white ; tiny shibori pattern fills the rest of background; (see close-ups).

Motifs: This is a common classic traditional Japanese motif using temari balls (childhood themes) on a shibori-looking pattern.

Condition: Excellent.
