Fabric Description: Used vintage, Japanese vintage kasuri (ikat) cotton fabric;
Fabric Type: Kasuri (ikat), Light-Medium Weight.
Colors: background is dark-indigo blue(almost black) with motifs in pale aqua-blue, dark colonial blue and dark blue; accents are small touches of red and light yellow (see close-ups).
Motifs: This is a distinctive ikat pattern composed of various geometric configurations lain out in a diagonal grid of diamond shapes with the bars and lines grouped within; Rather different than what we normally see; This may be from pre-WWII but we're not sure; It has a rare use of dark blue and is a width seen more so in 1920-1930's pieces.
This is a Japanese country vintage fabric called kasuri (also called ikat in Southeast Asia ) ; Kasuri is a labor-intensive process where patterns are made by pre-dyed paste resistance and varying techniques used to create the sorts of patterns seen here. Because of the methods used, authentic kasuri is usually highly expensive. More info on kasuri below:
