Opt-In Members Only Offers: Ohshima Tsumugi Silks(5lbs); Sleeveless Old Silk Kimonos

Opt-In Members Only Offers:

BACKGROUND:

During the year while we sort all our kimonos and fabrics to fill orders for our 10lb (and up) packages we set aside special fabrics and garments as we find them. Many are for sale at venues, but others we like to offer to members. When we get enough of something together we then offer them first to members registered with our opt-in mail list.

These packages are usually things which we never have -- or seldom have -- offered on our website. Since we have many regulars who are aficionados of antique textiles and Japanese vintage fabrics, we want to give them an even chance at getting these special offerings. Previously we used a first-come first-served but members felt that was unfair. So, following suggestions from members we have settled on a private lottery system for such offers. Then, only when members have had a chance to purchase the special packages do we then post to our web site if there is no interest among members.

OFFER#1:

1920s-1950s   Rare Japanese Textiles:
Ohshima Tsumugi (pongee) Silk Fabric

Five Pounds Package -- Members Only

US$85.00
Plus Shipping

DESCRIPTION:

We now have accumulated three(3) five pound packages of very rare Ohshima Tsumugi (pongee)silk (1920s-1950s) which is highly prized among Japanese textile lovers. This type traditional silk fabric is known for its use of mud and natural substances in its coloring process. These fabrics are from pre-war and just after World War II Japan and are all made in the old fashion, NOT the same as more modern Ohshima silks.

Details on this Ohshima part of Japan's special pongee silk-making process can be found on the National Foundation for Promoting the National Costume of Japan web site, which  explains the natural plant dyes and mud  etc. used in making Ohshima Tsumugi, quoted here:

Characteristics: A plain woven silk fabric with pre-dyed scoured threads both for warp and weft. The color is refined and calm and the fabric is soft and difficult to wrinkle. Threads are dyed with plant dyes such as "Techiki" (Raphilolepis umbellata) and indigo (Persicaria tinctoria) with a technique, peculiar only to "Oshima Tsumugi," called "Ori Jime." As a variety, an additional treatment is made to the dyed thread by dipping them in muddy water. It is "Doro(mud) Zome(dyeing)." There are several kinds of "Oshima Tsumugi":"Doro Oshima," "Ai(indigo) Oshima," "Doro Ai Oshima," "Iro(color) Oshima" and "Natsu(summer) Oshima."

Rarely found, popular among Antique Japanese textile aficionados and textile artists.
