Item Details and Description

Fabric History/Pedigree: 1980's tsumugi (pongee) silk pieces received from a traditional Japanese kimono cleaner/reconstructor (Arai-Hari -- see an excellent explanation of traditional Arai Hari by textile expert  John Marshall, expert on Japanese textiles  HERE .)

Fabric Description:  This distinctive Japanese vintage traditional Tsumugi is a lightweight pongee-type silk that is made from a cream color thread, but the majority of the colors of the entire fabric are a range of mustard to several shades of light yellows and tans; The design is rows and columns delineated by red and brown pinstripes; these pinstripes serve as borders of ten columns equally spaced; Furthermore, note the rows/columns of blocks (1.5inches/38.1mm X 1.25 inches/31.75mm); WIthin the blocks are 2 types of figures: one is 4 fuzzy squares in a cross-shaped array, the others are an "X" created by thin black lines of perpendicular orientation (Please see closeups); Colors used: black, gray, red, blues; the weave of this tsumugi piece reveals roughness in the weft, but intermittent, thus, textured feel; slightly stiff to the touch; note the bordered columns merge with checkerboard kind of design;

Colors: Reminder that colors differ on each device so please use our text color descriptions to complement your sense of the look of this piece.
