Site Search Information
& Our Reviews of Search Engines
Is there life after Google?
NOTES:
Yes, we use google as our main engine for everyday searches. However, sometimes we find that for certain searches we get better and varying results when we also search on yahoo and the engines listed on this page. Our pet peeve has become engines which place paid ad results in the layout with true ranked links as if they were popularity ranked (when they are paid to be there); that's why -- so far -- Google has made it clear what is true rank and what is a paid link.

Dogpile.com ( Meta-search engine):

This is
our go-to search engine when we want to conduct focused searches.
First we search Google, then dogpile.com. Dogpile sometimes provides
things not as highly rated or missing in Google. ALSO, allows
search for images & more.
(Nov.2006)
The only criticism we have of Dogpile
now is that the sponsored (paid) listings are listed mingled with
regular results (not set aside & easily identified as in google
etc), so unless you notice this, you think you're getting true
page rank, when actually you're getting ads. This is a relatively
new development (since 2005). We still use it, but scan to the
second page where true ranks are seen. Of late though we're leaning
towards ask.com, reviewed below.

Ask.com
(Merged with Teoma.com in 2005)
Super relevant
searches, advanced search algorithms: Great for providing not only
highly intelligent searches, but also this is an engine which gives
search results as well as resources and similar link tree topics
on the right of the page. Good for academic searches: To check it
