Background: Joan Schulze is an accomplished and renowned textile artist, lecturer and teacher whom we met in our booth at the 2006 Cherry Blossom Festival in Philadelpia. She told us about her uses of vintage Japanese textiles in her media-art work and we suggested that she might want to show her work here in our gallery. Upon returning home we visited her web site http://www.joan-of-arts.com/ and invited her to be a guest artist here and she has graciously agreed. Enjoy! Yoko Lewis Artist's Comments: My use of Japanese fabrics is varied. I often combine them with fabrics I alter by monoprinting, printing and layering. I may find one piece that sets off a work like the righthand sided of my quilt PARIS which uses one length of indigo wax resist fabric from an antique kimono that I deconstructed. One small elegant piece in a collage will be the part that holds the design together. I also use my collection of Japanese fabrics to inspire me at the beginning a a day in the studio. I have printed over a piece of silk that has a repeat pattern. The combining of what is mine and what is found make for unique results. Joan Schulze, 2006
