This is a rarely seen fabric called Japanese asa, a hemp or flax based fabric more common before the modern era. Asa is stronger and lasts longer than cotton-based textiles. This black piece is slightly translucent and very slightly coarse to the touch; was original intended for use in making a light summer kimono (yukata); Estimated as from the 1930's-40s. Patterns are interwoven in gray, white with thin accent lines of light blue & red (see close-ups); patterns are same on both sides, fray at the selvage on each side is common with this type fabric. Of particular interest to Japanese traditional fabric enthusiasts and textile artists. Outstanding condition, clean, strong and no holes. We have more than 1.5 yards, most of which has not been cut yet (available at US$20/yd, 1.5yd min.).
