This is a distinctive light weight Japanese silk from the very early 20th Century, early Showa, probably from the 1920s-30's. Fabric is from a kimono which was taken apart & cleaned years ago. Condition of this silk is quite remarkable for its age, still being a bit stiff as though it were just made. This fabric is light, slightly porous, and was probably made for wear in warmer weather; Background is a dark purple, almost black with horizontal bands in light gray, white and red.Motifs run the length of the fabric, clusters of four-point star shapes; Colors of fabric in room light are slightly more subdued (lighter) than shown in these pictures. Overall condition is excellent, fabric is clean and there are no holes, tears nor stains; still intact and strong; recommended for creative uses in making scarf, clothing accessory, quilting.
