This is a special type of mock-silk, jinken* (literally, man-made) light- weight kimono fabric of the type called omeshi, that is, woven in the kasuri ikat style; This is deadstock (unused but older) fabric which is solid black with floral patterns in a muted light silver; same on both sides.

Cultural Notes on Terms:

Jinken: While much jinken fabric is made from rayon, earlier jinken also used wood pulp in the manufacture process; Jinken is popular among many Japanese because it is easier to care for than silk and also has a nice feel to it.
Omeshi: This refers to a weaving process which mimics ikat (kasuri) making, a labor-intensive process where patterns are made by pre-dyed paste resistance and have a fuzzy quality about them.

Fabric still strong, like new with the somewhat smooth feel to it; Very popular among traditional Japanese fabric enthusiasts. Recommended for a variety of creative applications, quilting, garment or accessory-making.
